Presente es un texto que entrelaza memorias personales con datos de sucesos ocurridos durante 1989, escrito por invitación del grupo peruano de danza INTEGRO junto al antropólogo y crítico de arte Mijail Mitrovic, con motivo del 40º aniversario del grupo. Formó parte de una instalación del mismo nombre exhibida en Lima en el Centro Cultural de la Universidad Ricardo Palma.

Si la obra Y si después de tantas palabras -estrenada ese año- constituye el núcleo que da origen a la escritura, la performance Fábula, presentada en la Universidad Agraria de La Molina, es el marco que abre y cierra la serie de eventos. A lo largo del texto se despliegan algunas claves: las ovejas hambrientas de Fábula anticipan aquellas que, a inicios de 1989, habitaban el valle del Mantaro y luego desaparecen, como tanto desaparece a consecuencia de la guerra interna en el Perú. El texto realiza saltos temporales para mencionar hechos anteriores y posteriores a 1989 que, en mi memoria, formaban parte de un mismo cuerpo afectivo. Se enfatizan los lugares de Lima cercanos a la sala de teatro donde se presentó Y si después…, aunque la serie de eventos se desplaza también por muchas otras regiones del Perú y por algunos lugares fuera de él.

Como fuente para la escritura utilicé materiales públicos de archivo, materiales de mi archivo personal y realicé un largo ejercicio de memoria, para regresar a esos años y a sus ambivalencias, donde la pasión más inagotable podía convivir con el mayor dolor, el asombro con el horror, cuando el arrojo hacia la vida y la proximidad de la muerte eran una sola y misma cosa.

Presente is a text that weaves together personal memories with accounts of events that took place in 1989, written at the invitation of the Peruvian dance group INTEGRO together with anthropologist and art critic Mijail Mitrovic, on the occasion of the group’s 40th anniversary. It formed part of an installation bearing the same name, shown in Lima at the Centro Cultural of the Universidad Ricardo Palma.

If the piece Y si después de tantas palabras -first performed that year- is the core that gives rise to the writing, then the performance Fábula, presented at the Universidad Agraria de La Molina, is the frame that both opens and closes the series of events. Throughout the text, certain motifs emerge: the hungry sheep in Fábula foreshadow those that inhabited the Mantaro Valley in early 1989, and which later disappeared – as so much did in the wake of Peru’s internal war. The text moves back and forth in time, touching on events before and after 1989 that, in my memory, all belonged to a single emotional body. It emphasises the parts of Lima close to the theatre where Y si después… was performed, although the series of events also reaches many other regions of Peru and some places beyond.

As sources for the writing, I drew on public archival materials, materials from my personal archive, and undertook a long exercise in remembering – to return to those years and their ambivalences: when an inexhaustible passion could coexist with the deepest pain, wonder with horror, and when the daring embrace of life and the nearness of death were one and the same thing.
