Cuadernos Loro (2020)

Escritas durante los meses de cuarentena impuesta en el Perú a causa del COVID-19, estas planas retoman un método de corrección de errores propio de la enseñanza escolar de mi infancia: el trabajo de escribir las mismas frases una y otra vez, bajo el supuesto de que esa repetición acabaría por incorporar un saber. La pandemia y la reclusión han traido un periodo suspendido en el rumor de las mismas palabras y las mismas ansiedades, que retornan sin posibilidad de recibir respuesta. Hay en las planas un agotamiento vano; en algún momento, mientras escribo, las palabras dejan de evocar y se vuelven solo línea y color. Luego regresan a significar, y así van y vienen. Aparece algo entre el castigo y la meditación, la inutilidad y el trabajo, la palabra y su forma.

Cuadernos Loro formó parte del proyecto “De voz a voz” una iniciativa conjunta del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Lima, Movistar Perú y el Diario El Comercio, que, en 2021 invitó a distintos artistas peruanos a publicar su obra en la portada de la sección cultural, complementada con un artículo de análisis en las páginas interiores.

Loro Notebooks (2020)

Written during the months of quarantine imposed in Peru because of COVID-19, these writing exercises revisit an error-correction method from my childhood schooling: the task of writing the same sentences over and over again, based on the premise that this repetition would eventually instill a piece of knowledge. The pandemic and seclusion brought a period suspended in the murmur of the same words and the same anxieties, which return with no possibility of an answer. In these exercises, there is a futile exhaustion; at some point, as I write, the words cease to evoke and become mere line and color. Then they return to meaning, and so they come and go. Something emerges between punishment and meditation, between futility and labor, the word and its form.

Cuadernos Loro was part of the project “De voz a voz” (“From Voice to Voice”), a joint initiative of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Lima, Movistar Perú and the newspaper El Comercio. The project invited various Peruvian artists to publish their work on the cover of the cultural section, accompanied by an in-depth analysis article inside the newspaper.
