Rock a Way (2022 / 2016)

I stepped into a restaurant in Chelsea to get a bottle of water. My friend Ruso was waiting for me outside, and when I came back out, he shared something he had just come across on his phone: not long before Hurricane Sandy arrived, Patti Smith had a small bungalow in Rockaway Beach.

We had been talking about her as we walked. I mentioned that I had just bought M Train, and told him how much I had enjoyed Just Kids. We spoke a little about her face and the white shirt she wears on the cover of Horses. That night, in the small apartment I was staying at in Harlem, I searched online for any clue that might lead me to that bungalow. I simply wanted to see it. Two days later, on May 1, 2016, I took the A train from 125th Street, heading south.
